Many people spend years preparing financially for retirement but feel surprisingly uncertain about one specific area: healthcare.
And often, it is not because they have not saved enough.
It is because the rules feel complicated, the costs feel unpredictable, and the decisions seem interconnected in ways that are hard to fully see until someone lays them out side by side.
In this video, I walk through the three major layers of retirement healthcare planning that I believe every pre-retiree should understand:
• The bridge years before Medicare begins
• Medicare decisions at 65
• Long term care planning later in retirement
One of the biggest mistakes I see is people treating these decisions independently when they are often deeply connected.
For example, Roth conversions during the years before Medicare may help reduce future RMDs and improve long term tax flexibility. But at the same time, those same income decisions can affect ACA healthcare subsidies immediately and Medicare premiums later through IRMAA surcharges.
That is where thoughtful planning matters.
In this video, I explain:
• How ACA subsidies actually work in early retirement
• Why healthcare costs before Medicare are often more manageable than people expect
• The Medicare enrollment mistakes that can create permanent penalties
• The differences between Medicare Advantage and Original Medicare with Medigap
• What Medicare does and does not cover regarding long term care
• Different approaches to handling long term care risk, including self-funding, insurance, and hybrid strategies
I also walk through a real world style retirement scenario that illustrates how healthcare fears can sometimes lead people to delay retirement longer than necessary.
Healthcare planning in retirement is not just about minimizing costs. It is about understanding the tradeoffs, seeing how the decisions connect together, and making intentional choices before the planning windows close.
If you are approaching retirement and trying to think through these issues carefully, I think this video will help provide clarity.
